Highlight of Significant contributions by INDIA

Codex Committee on General Principles (Seventeenth Session- 15th to 19th April 2002) Application Of Risk Analysis in The Elaboration of Codex Standards (Paper Prepared by India) (Agenda Item 3b)

The paper highlighted the following:

  • Stress on importance of taking account of taking account of situation in developing countries with respect to primary production which is largely through small and medium enterprises;
  • risk assessment should be based on global data, including that from developing countries;these data should particularly include epidemiological surveillance data and exposure studies;
  • risk management should take into account the economic consequences and the feasibility of riskmanagement options in developing countries; and
  • risk management should also recognize the need for flexibility in the establishment of standards,guidelines and other recommendations, consistent with the protection of consumers' health, economic consequences, cultural practices in developing countries, feasibility.

The Codex Alimentarius Commission has endorsed these suggestions.
